The days of 20w-50 for engines and 75w-140 for gears are long gone. Oils are so superior nowadays don't be afraid to use lighter grades if thats whats called for. The second surprise was how little the JL Dana 44 (M220) held. It did not hold a full 2 quarts before dripping out the fill hole. I'm pretty shocked at that. TJ diff fluid. I am wanting to change the fluid in the front and rear diffs and I am not sure of the capacity or which axle I have. The front is stamped with DANA 40869-136-0 and the rear is DANA 43225-115-0. I am thinking the front is a Dana 35 and the rear is a Dana 44 but I might be wrong. It is a 2001 Sahara.

The Dana 60 spec is just under 3 quarts. In my personal experience, the Dana 50 will take about 2.5 - 2.75 quarts to fill to the plug. As far as I know, the D50 and D60 use the same case, so they SHOULD have the same capacity. Be warned though, if your inner axle seals are bad, overfilling will make that obvious.
