I really hate crossbows. They would be fine if I could block arrows with skill, or if the NPC's didn't have infinite ammo. I checked this by putting on a lot of heavy armor pieces on one of my turret dudes, putting him on a turret and shooting something real quick. You can see the skill level a person has when they are using something in the bottom left. His turret skill did not go down, so I think they are completely separate. 9.Crossbows should be nerfed. Killed 2 elder beak things by bleeding them out, their body parts weren't even close to negative but crossies fucked them. They should def be nerfed , the people whom I gave the crossies were low lvl chars which I happened to have recruited recently and gave them stolen crossies just in case.

Reload speed is affected by crossbow skill. This means weapons with a large range of reload speeds (particularly the old world bow mk 2 ) penalize low skill to a greater degree.
