Apr 8, 2024 · All in all, I was very much pleasantly surprised by the quality of this under-the-radar whisky. I wouldn’t put it on par with a bottle of The Macallan 12, but for $27 a bottle, it could easily become my favorite daily dram. Please note that this is NOT the same as the Kirkland Lowland included in the 4-bottle Kirkland Scotch sampler.
Full disclosure, this 40% Speyside single malt no longer exists, replaced in 2017 with the 46% alcohol version. With so many 18-year-old Scotches costing at least $100 (e.g., The Glenlivet 18 at around $130), the $40-50 the Kirkland 18 Year Speyside looks like a steal, so let’s see if it is. Unfortunately, the 25 year was discontinued in 2017. I believe it was one of the oldest Kirkland Scotches that they sold at the time, with the 20-year sherry-finished version taking over that mantle in 2019, although the 24 Year Old Blended Scotch may apparently still be on sale, but I can't confirm. Just picked up 4 bottles of the Islay and one of 12 year old blend at Costco at Willowbrook mall in Wayne New Jersey. I love Lagavullin 16 and this Islay malt is pretty close for my tastes. It is also $36 vs $ 80 plus for the Lagavullin. The 12 year blend is pretty darn good for $35 for 1.75 liters !!!

A few years ago I drank a bottle of their “highland malt”, which was 16 years old and 40% ($45). I wasn’t disappointed for the price. Then, maybe 2 years ago or less, I saw the 18-year old sherry-finished KS, now at 46% and at $50 (or $55, can’t recall). Still have that bottle, very pleasant for the money, even if not spectacular.
