They are very similar schools in terms of research ($136 million in NIH funding for BU vs $125 million for UMass), and UMass is currently building a new research building and also just got a $175 million donation a few months ago. The apartments rent was 1480$ (2016 prices; probably are higher now) which included all utilities except laundry which was in the basement and reasonably priced.
