If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Personally I would not use Lil-gun in my 45-70.This load has been around for more then 50 yrs. Use it with a 300gr cast for varmints and kids plinking in any 45-70 that is tight and safe to shoot including the original civil war era trap doors. You have to match the powder for the job. There is no one-fitzall out there. Been there done this for 50+ years.

Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it. Pretty good powder for the .45-70 IMHO. Still below the max load according to Nosler. For 405gr Lead heads I use 40gr max of H4198. My rifle is a Browning made Winchester 1886, capable of handling the same loads as the Marlin 1895. I've found a table quoting that Viht N130 is an equivalent to 4198 so might look into that a bit further.
