Without it, the blade could accidentally open in your pocket. There are a couple of fixes. You could simply crank down the pivot and use friction to keep the blade where it belongs.The thumb studs on the Leek are actually primarily blade stop pins. Remove them, and the knife will not deploy and lock securely. Kershaw, as far as I know, also press-fits the thumb studs on most of their models.
