The manual that came with mine makes no mention of converting and the frame has a key-way built into it that indexes with the .22 barrel that would inter fear with a standard swinging link 1911 barrel, more than likely done on purpose to stop people from trying. The "changing system" mentioned in the GSG site is actually for doing the opposite.

I'm not sure how the cover is attached but I can't remove it by screwing it off.
